9.00 Keynote Positive Behaviour Support in the Classroom for Students on the Autism Spectrum. Presented by Alicia Baud
Most behaviours are a form of communication. Often, children with autism voice their needs or frustrations through behaviours. The key is to understand the underlying causes of these challenging behaviours in order to determine how best to manage and modify them.
We will look at:
The 'characteristics' of autism and how they often relate to challenging behaviours
Breaking down the elements of a behaviour to see why it is occurring
Meltdown vs tantrums
Proactive strategies to prevent the behaviour from occurring
Using visual supports to facilitate understanding
Explicitly teaching new skills and coping strategies that replace inappropriate behaviours
How to provide positive reinforcement and plan for success
